These two old dames remained in Baccarat all during the German invasion in 1914 and a German general slept in my room; it ought to give me bad dreams but somehow I manage to sleep like a log! Madame M. is a lady of some social position in these parts, shown by the fact that she has a servant to look after her and a little plot of ground behind her house where grow the most bewitching old-fashioned flowers. She has snow-white hair and large brown eyes that always wear a half frightened look, as well they may, for the death-dealing German planes have harassed this poor soul night and day for four years. She told me that in 1914 she and her faithful old servant were among the very few who remained in their little town. She said " Mais, mademoiselle, I could not leave my little house, the home where my husband had lived and died and which held all the beautiful memories of my life. This is an interesting story in that it provides a first-hand account of a young woman's participation overseas during WWI as a canteen worker for the YMCA. It informs us through letters Marion Baldwin sent home about her personal experiences. It also paints a picture of how the work was carried out, where, and for whom. For my own use I annotated a first edition of this book. Many of the places and people Baldwin mentions can be located through Internet searches and in databases of old newspapers. I bought this subsequent edition as a digital backup to my hard copy and found it has only a few annotations. This edition has some errors of fact. For example, the Publisher’s Notes section states Baldwin was, “the only child of Albert Francis Baldwin (sometimes recorded as Edward.” In fact, she was one of five children of Elbert Francis Baldwin. She married in 1920, not 1925. On page 79, the named Mr. and Mrs. Francis Rogers were not politicians as annotated, but entertainers. Many personal names, places and events could have been annotated or footnoted easily. Some explanation about the different social and political climate at the time would have been helpful. Real annotations would give modern readers historical context and explanations. You would be better off reading the free first edition and looking up the names and terms that you want to know more about.Product details

In July 1917, three months after the U.S. entered World War I, 22-year-old Marian Baldwin sailed from New York to France. She spent the next two years running "canteens" for American troops -- places where men on leave from the fighting could write letters, sing, play games, and buy snacks and smokes. Most of Miss Baldwin's work was under the direction of the YMCA. She was stationed in Paris, Bordeaux, Aix les Bains, Mihiel (near the Front), Verdun (after the Armistice), and Germany (for the first eight months of the Weimar Republic).
Throughout her time in Europe, Miss Baldwin wrote letters home (evidently to her parents in New York, although this is never explicit). The letters are collected in Canteening Overseas, which was originally published in 1920. The copy I read had been shelved in the Seattle Public Library under "Reference."
Miss Baldwin has a charming writing style. Although she is at pains to maintain a cheerful tone so as not to upset her parents, the reader gets a strong sense of just how hard she is willing to work in support of the "Sammies" ("doughboys" was not yet a term in vogue), how strong is her sense of adventure, and how delighted the soldiers were with her company. She befriends many soldiers, several of whom die during the fighting, and exhibits determination, for their sakes, to do her job and do it well.
The book is a fast, informative and entertaining read. I reached the end longing to know what happened to Miss Baldwin after the war, and to see a photo of this remarkable young woman. Alas, electronic searches proved fruitless. She seems to have vanished, leaving only the wonderful record of her wartime experiences. I am delighted to see that a new edition of Canteening Overseas has just been published.

I am a descendant of this Baldwin line.
I came across this book recently and believe she may have been the sister to my GG Grandfather but havent confirmed. I read all I could of the digital version last night and will order a copy as well as order a copy of this reprint.
