"Hook's Pan" is a fun paranormal romance with an intriguing premise: James Hook is the good guy (well, actually, he's a Bad Boy, of course, but in the sexy way, not the evil way), and Peter Pan is an annoying brat who accidentally murdered Hook's beloved, the mermaid Talia. Only it turns out she's been reincarnated in the body of an Earth woman, Trishelle, who just so happens to be playing the role of Peter Pan in the local play at the moment when a fairy godmother whisks her off to Neverland...I'm a sucker for these reimagined fairy stories/kids' stories type books, and I certainly enjoyed the concept of a sexy Captain Hook finally finding true love. The book is pretty slight, but anyone looking for a fun, magical, erotic romance featuring one of literature's biggest villains will probably enjoy it loads. The editing wasn't completely clean, but the problems were minor.
My version (I got a promotional copy on sale) also came with "The Sea Queen," a novel featuring the goddess Calypso and her romance with Hades, God of the Dead, published by the author under the name Jovee Winters. I also enjoyed that a lot: Calypso is constantly (and hilariously) experimenting with her shaky knowledge of modern slang, so that she calls Hades (whom she is keeping as her sex slave) Dead Boy and (much to his surprise) Bubble Butt, and the Olympic pantheon gets quite a shake-up when it tries to come between them! Again, it's a slight novel, more of a novella, but it's another fun reimagining of the bad guys as the good guys, with lots of sexy hijinks thrown in.

Hook Pan Kingdom Series Book 5 eBook Marie Hall Reviews
I did not read this series in order but I'm not lost starting near the end. Hook's Pan is a twist on Peter Pan where the classic vicious and ugly pirate is suddenly brought into a new light. He isn't evil exactly, just misunderstood. Peter and Tinkerbell on the other hand are the brats you suspected but may never have thought too deeply about portrayed in the stories and movies of today.
I was pulled into the story at the very beginning. The writing style of Marie Hall is absolutely wonderful! Everything played out like a movie inside my head. It's filled with drama, sexual tension, comedy relief, and that dearly beloved 'the heart knows all' message that I loved to read about as a kid. It's literally a fairy tale for adults.
Neverland was beautifully detailed with underwater cities, floating cliffs in the sky, and soft little creatures that weave together our dreams. I never wanted to leave this new and exciting fantasy! The plot line had twists of its own that kept me on the edge of my seat, caught between gasping, sighing in awe, giggling, and blushing.
Bad boys are my favorite, but Hook found a special place in my heart. He's attractive, protective, a little brutish but also very charming. The easy banter between him and Trish was a lot of fun to follow. She is a tough, sassy woman who knows what she wants and isn't going to be pushed away from that goal. Much like him, she has a haunted past that keeps a mask firmly in place so no one can see what is really going on underneath the surface.
I've already bought the rest of this series and highly recommend this to fans of paranormal romance and fairy tales everywhere!
Definitely rating this 5 stars for sure.
***Spoilers contained in this review***
Trish can never love again, because her sister's husband beat her until she died of suicide. Hook can never love again because his One True Love™ was killed by Peter Pan in what can only be generously described as an accident. That said, if you've read anything of the Peter Pan story in the book, you'll know that the little brat was a sociopath to the core. It explains why there's (more or less) blood feud between Hook and Pan.
Let it be said that I loved this story. Yes, we've all seen the overarching plot a million times before in romance novels True Love will out, no matter the circumstances or the crazy involved in making it happen. The sex is hot. The relationship starts off antagonistic, but there's always this "It just feels so right" thing underlining it. Without those tropes, the story itself would be no fun. Why? Because the build up to the reasons why they can never love again are pretty major. Being witness to domestic abuse in a close loved one isn't something that one recovers from. Having the love of your life killed off on a whim by a sociopath isn't something you let go of, because the sex was hot. Without that element of magic to it all, where the two are literally fated for each other, and pretty much /will/ fall in love if they give each other a chance to do so, their undying love happening in three days is not possible to buy into.
So fortunately, we do have that magical element, and it lets you put your scepticism on hold.
We get a chance to see Tinkerbell as a sociopath as well. We see Peter Pan's true nature as a soulless, immoral jerk. And, at the end of the day, Hook /is/ a pirate. He doesn't become suddenly a paragon of virtue because he found his one true love. He's still very protective of his treasures, and still has that mentality of a pirate. And that's OK.
That's what I love about this book in particular. The redemption story isn't about conforming to the legal virtues associated with modern-day society. Instead, it's about the redemption of the person's ability to enjoy life, to love, to laugh, and generally live up to his or her potential as a vibrant, happy person. Trish doesn't fall for Hook in spite of his bad boy ways, but almost because of them. The same goes for Hook. He loves Trish, because she's intelligent, quick-witted, and is quite clear about her boundaries from the moment they meet. Of all the Kingdom books, I feel like this one was the most fun to read.
